Why should birds receive extra vitamins?
The traditional seed mixtures, 'however balanced' these may be, are never able to supply all the fundamental requirements a bird depends on for an optimal functioning of all its physical activities. As is the case for essential amino acids, minerals and trace elements, so it is that many vitamins are lacking in the seeds mixes. Moreover, these vitamins are very sensitive to moisture, direct sunlight and high temperatures: their activity may even be destroyed after some time. Important functions in the bird's body may through this vitamin deficiency be threatened: vitamins (Latin vita = life) are thus vital to life itself!
The metabolic processes (build-up and destruction of protoplasm) of the bird can be influenced in such way, that your bird is even more sensitive to vitamin deficiencies in specific periods. The
breeding period for example is a very demanding one. The hen lays about her weight in eggs and must after a brooding session cope with the stress of feeding its nestlings. Sometimes up to three times a year! This is very strenuous for the bird. Along with the important building blocks such as amino acids, it is also vitally important to supply extra vitamins. This is not only important for fertility and formation of the egg but also for the growth of the young!
The
moulting period is one of renewal: constant replacing of new feathers puts a great strain on the metabolic processes. Along with a lot of vitamins, the bird also needs specific sulphurous amino acids. These are lacking in the standard foods. Another factor which is exhausting for the bird is
stress: the resulting lower resistance makes the bird more susceptible to infections. A shortage of vitamins will aggravate this situation and the bird will eventually become sick. In all these life phases, it is of major importance to add extra vitamins and other essential nutritional elements to the bird's food.
As previously demonstrated, the requirements of specific vitamins and amino acids are dependant on the physiological condition of the bird. To stimulate the reproductive behaviour for example, the birds will need a higher vitamin E-dosage; while in the moulting period they will require more sulphurous amino acids and biotin. That's why our scientific team developed three vitamin preparations in the
Orlux Premium Health Line, which meet the vitamin and amino acid requirements specific to each period of the bird's life.
