What is intestinal flora and how to obtain a favorable intestinal flora?
Digestion is an important process in the body of the bird. The food to be digested will be the source of energy, which will enable the bird to carry out its substantial functions. A well-balanced digestive tract of birds is really essential although not always obvious. A lot of factors might be the cause of an unbalanced intestinal flora and indigestion, e.g. stress, illness, transportation... In order to guarantee your bird's health, we must take care that the complete digestion crop to intestinal is evenly balanced.
The favorable and pathogenic bacteria which are found in the bowels are called
intestinal flora. A healthy bird with a balanced intestinal flora possesses more favorable than pathogenic bacteria. When however the pathogenic bacteria in the digestive tract dominate the favorable bacteria, a bird gets ill. The administration of antibiotics will kill the favorable bacteria as well as the pathogenic intestinal bacteria. In order to guarantee a new supply and a rapid increase of the favorable bacteria, probiotics and intestinal conditioners are used.
The first method is by administering an intestinal conditioner. An intestinal conditioner serves as food for the
favorable intestinal flora and will take care that pathogenic bacteria don't attach themselves to the intestinal wall. A second way is by administering probiotics; these are favorable bacteria, which are naturally presented in the bird's intestinal. The third method, and possibly the most optimal one, is a combination of both methods.
Intestinal conditioners
Intestinal conditioners contain a high value of soluble fibres. These are mucous, gelatinous substances, which form at the surface of the intestines a sort of jelly, which protects the intestinal wall and regulates the intestinal operations. These substances take care that birds' droppings become more consistent and minimize the liquid loss via the excrements. The best intestinal conditioners also contain fructo-oligo-saccharides (FOS).
These FOS, also called "pre-probiotics" serve as alimentation for favorable bacteria in the bird's intestinal, whereas pathogenic bacteria cannot use them as food source. The consequence is, that the favorable bacteria dominate the pathogenic ones, so that the bird can again build up a healthy intestinal flora.
Probiotics

Another method to optimize the bird's intestinal flora and its digestion is by administering probiotics. Probiotics are
favorable, lactic acid-producing bacteria, which are normally found in the bird's bowels. Giving probiotics means giving favorable bacteria. By adding enzymes, which improves the digestion of the food, we can be sure that the entire digestive tract of the bird is influenced positively. To assure a good functioning of probiotics, high concentrations of favorable bacteria are necessary. Orlux Probi-zyme is one of those few preparations in which concentrations of lactic acid-producing bacteria are guaranteed.
The
united functioning by simultaneously administering an intestinal conditioner and probiotics will lead to the best results. By this method, favorable bacteria (probiotics) as well as their food (fructo-oligosaccharides) are administered. This assures a healthy intestinal flora and an optimal digestion.
In case of digestive upsets and in all cases of watery droppings, it is recommended, next to classic medicine, to use an intestinal conditioner and/or probiotics as supporting medicine. You can also preventively use an intestinal conditioner and/or probiotics, which is even better.
Bio-digest, the intestinal conditioner and
Probi-zyme, the probiotics out of the
Orlux Premium Health Line - are natural products, which may be used without any danger for a long time. Thus, it is recommended, from the moment of hatching to the moment young birds eat independently, to administer Bio-digest and/or Probi-zyme, which also guarantees a better nest hygiene. The typically flatter excrements of many insectivorous- and frugivorous birds become thicker by using Bio-digest and/or Probi-zyme. Before exhibitions as well as after exposure to unusual stress situations, it is recommended to administer Bio-digest and/or Probi-zyme.
