Why do birds need calcium?
Calcium provision to birds is often overlooked by many bird-lovers; calcium however is of very great importance. Shortages of calcium in birds often often lead to very serious health problems. Especially during the breeding- and growing period, a provision with extra calcium is really recommendable. Calcium is essential for a good shell formation and the construction of a healthy skeleton. If birds do not receive sufficient calcium, decalcification of the skeleton and malformation of the bones will be the consequence. If the hen bird does not receive enough calcium during the breeding period, she will produce a poor shell formation and will even be faced with small clutches.
Beyond the breeding period, calcium is also of great importance in several physical processes. It is essential for the good functioning of the nerve system. A beautiful example of this are the African greys. If they don't ingest sufficient calcium, they will suffer from nervous complaints and cramp attacks, better known as calcium tetany. That's why it is so important for your bird's health and its common well-being that they regularly receive calcium.
As there is insufficient calcium in seeds and the ingestion via pebbles, calcium blocks or oyster shells is difficult to check, the regular administration of calcium via the drinking water is a good habit. Orlux Calci-lux is a high-quality calcium source, easy of ingestion through its very good solubility, and can be administered via the drinking water without any difficulty. The regular administration of Calci-lux will protect your birds against the above-mentioned complaints of troubles.
